The European Commission on Wednesday (April 11) approved its decision on the first approved European Union drug for erectile dysfunction (ED) with sildenafil, the first erectile dysfunction drug to be approved in more than a decade.
This approval follows a similar decision of the European Medicines Agency (EMA) for the treatment of pulmonary arterial hypertension, an in which the EMA has recommended that sildenafil be the first non-surgical treatment for erectile dysfunction.
“The decision on the first approved drug for erectile dysfunction with sildenafil is a strong and timely one in the EU,” EMA President and CEO Emanuele Fanardi said in a statement.
“It will help improve patients’ quality of life and reduce the cost of ED treatment,” he added. “It will also help patients pay for their medications.”
A sildenafil tablet, marketed under the name Viagra, is one of the most widely used drugs for erectile dysfunction. The drug works by relaxing blood vessels in the penis, allowing more blood to flow into the penis when sexually excited. However, it can also cause side effects such as headaches, muscle pain, flushing, dizziness, and low blood pressure.
Efficacy of the treatment was measured by a questionnaire and a comparison of the results. Viagra users reported a significant improvement in their erectile function compared to the placebo.
The drug has already been approved by the European Medicines Agency (EMA) for treatment of erectile dysfunction in more than a decade.

WASHINGTON — The U. S. Department of Health and Human Services says it has reached a deal with Pfizer Inc. to let the company provide generic versions of erectile dysfunction drugs without a prescription. Under the agreement, Pfizer will pay the Department of Health and Human Services $25 million to resolve allegations that it is conspiring to violate the federal Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act and the False Claims Act, and that it failed to disclose any of the terms of its deal.
The deal was announced by the Department of Health and Human Services’ Office on Wednesday afternoon. It comes as the U. Department of Health and Human Services continues to closely monitor and investigate allegations that Pfizer Inc. is colluding to influence and delay the approval of erectile dysfunction drugs such as Viagra and Cialis. The Department of Health and Human Services said it would not release details of its investigation until after the deadline for its initial report. In its latest quarterly report, Pfizer said it is aware of allegations and that it does not intend to make any disclosures in the report.
“Pfizer has no intention of changing its business relationship with the Department of Health and Human Services, and we will continue to do everything we can to ensure that the Department of Health and Human Services is doing its utmost to keep Pfizer accountable and that the Department is doing its utmost to ensure that the health and safety of its members and staff remains protected,” said David A. Butts, secretary of health and human services. “I am satisfied that Pfizer is doing everything we can to ensure that the Department of Health and Human Services is doing its utmost to keep the pharmaceutical industry safe.”
In the report, the Department’s Office on the Department of Health and Human Services found that Pfizer’s actions in the past were closely monitored by the health and human services department and that the Department of Health and Human Services does not intend to release any details of its investigation. In a letter posted to the Department of Health and Human Services on Wednesday afternoon, the Department of Health and Human Services said it has received an email from Pfizer requesting information from the Office on the Department of Health and Human Services. The letter stated that the Department has received information from Pfizer in relation to the investigation, and that the Department of Health and Human Services has “no plans” to provide information to the press about what Pfizer did to influence the investigation. “The Department of Health and Human Services has no plans to release any information about its investigation,” the letter said.
The Department of Health and Human Services said it has concluded that there was no agreement between Pfizer and the Department of Health and Human Services, that there was no communication of any kind between Pfizer and the Department of Health and Human Services, and that the Department of Health and Human Services “has no intention” to release any information about the investigation.
Pfizer’s allegations in the letter “are not credible,” said the letter. The letter said that in a letter dated July 3, 2006, Pfizer’s counsel stated that “we do not have any information regarding the company’s efforts to influence the investigation. We will continue to share this information with the Department of Health and Human Services.”
Pfizer’s allegations were “not supported by the evidence,” the letter said. In its letter to the Department of Health and Human Services, Pfizer said it does not intend to make any disclosures in relation to its investigation. However, Pfizer’s response to the letter said that the Department of Health and Human Services “is continuing to take all reasonable steps to ensure that its employees are being held accountable and liable for their own professional conduct.”
Pfizer’s investigation has not been concluded and the Department of Health and Human Services has not yet released its investigation. Pfizer continues to be aware of its allegations in the letter and the Department of Health and Human Services’ response to the letter.
“Pfizer’s actions in the past, and its commitment to the Department of Health and Human Services, are part of a larger effort to protect the public and to provide adequate and effective care to our employees,” said Butts in the letter. “We will continue to share this information with the Department of Health and Human Services.
